War Poem

BOOM! Another deafening explosion of a bomb!
How long will this ear piercing noise in my ears go on?
Constant gun fire rings all around
Bodies lying motionless like dead fish on the ground

Rats…rats…rats..and rats as big as bloomin’ cats!
Scuttling along the floor looking for anything or anyone to gnaw!
I’m on the patrol at night
How dearly does my body feel fright

I sleep here with my gun beside me
I tightly hold my hands and pray
that the sun will rise another day!

Smoke makes the air as black as coal
And the ground is just one big hole
I see a bird fly as high as a kite up in the sky
But all I can think of is “how long ‘til I die!”
