“The War Widow; Peace’s Bride”

He’s in Iraq again,
she would say to all that asked
they’d whoop in signs of patriotism
yet mock behind her back

The wedding ring upon her finger
is tainted by well-intentioned blood he split
she said she’d stay there forever
but she never realized it’d be a long wait

The letter came in the mail
and apologized for her loss
the words jumped from the page
My God, My God, unleashed hell’s chaos

Once a support of the war,
she changed from inside out
she yearned for peace and compassion
and in turn became war’s assassin

Diplomacy, friendship
simple turns that could have saved his life
but arms races and competition
have left the world shrouded in the night
