THE MENIN GATE AT YPRES

It looks like the Arc de Triomphe
But the names mean so much more
Not a dated list of battles
But fallen heroes by the score.
Every one a missing soldier
Totals difficult to understand
Sent forward like herds of cattle
To fall in fields on foreign lands
The list is constant, total, endless
Engraved names on the sun bleached wall
Smith, Jones, Garner, Pope or Bradley
Just search and you’ll find them all.
