The Dark

Definition of despair:
Someone’s mind beyond repair?
A wilful creak on the stair
And a fly trapped in a spider’s lair,
Torments of the child – alone
With the angry ringing telephone,
Echoes crash from the mockery stone:
Nanny’s voice in the nursery tone
Brings cold comfort and order,
Stilling the anguished recorder:
“Child still!” Without a border,
Haunted by a watching warder.
