Dear Mum,
“To War” they cried, we went
“Dig deep” they said, we dug
“Stand To” they shouted, we stood
“Fix Bayonets” the order, we fixed
“Wait for the whistle” the cry, we did
“Over the Top” the command, we climbed
“Keep going boys” the shout, we marched
“Stay in the line” the plea, we tried
“Retreat, Fall Back” the panic, we ran
“Number off” the call, we’re fewer
“It’ll be over by Christmas” they say, we hope
