AVOIDING THE LIGHT

by | Feb 4, 2008 | Poetry | 0 comments

Darkness surrounds me
Dampness chills me
I shiver to maintain some heat,
Serenely it shrouds me
No sound to disturb me
Alone, in the night with my thoughts

Soul mates are close now
Braving their duties
No glow from the cloud hidden moon
We listen for movement
No sound in the darkness
For even the enemy sleep

A Flash! In the darkness
A Crack! In the silence
Serenity ruptured by light
The glow of a tracer
The yell! Of a gunshot
Our cocoon of darkness destroyed

The barrage of flares
That desecrates our womb
Only the strongest survive
We return to darkness
From whence we evolved
Shying away from the light.
