Where were you?

Where Were You?
when the shells were flying
and the boys were on the beach
sons and brothers dying
safely out of reach?

Where were you
when the landing craft were thrusting
through the waves toward the shore
with the cream of England’s youth
some to return no more?

Where were you
when they crawled up on their bellies
to save both you and me?
With the screaming of the wounded
And the coldness of the sea?

They should never be forgotten
those brave lads who gave their lives,
who left behind their loved ones,
fathers, mothers, wives.

I was just a little child
but still it makes me cry
the thought of young lads dying
and still I wonder why?
