War Wounds

A steel hook,
An ally limb.
What will people,
Think of him.

Back at home
I cannot see.
Both my eyes
Deserted me.

Look again
I cannot hear.
I only have
My right ear.

In my dreams
I wonder why
It was my time
Not to die

For my country
Now I’m half a man
But some folk
Don’t give a damn.

That I lost
My limbs for my Queen.
In a war,
Should never have been.

My reward for this
A piece of tin.
But my only wish
To see my kids grin.
