TO ONE OF THE FALLEN

Unknown soldier, nameless? No, not he
Unknown history, yes; no family tree
Private Johnson Hamill, where are you from?
We know where you died, on the infamous Somme

Birthplace, parents, siblings, unknown
Was anyone missing you, wishing you home?
Safe with your loved ones, smiling at last
Did anyone know Private Hamill had passed?

The Yorkshire Regiment lost men everyday
Some to be buried, just where they lay
Not so Private Hamill whose grave has been found
Alongside his comrades, safe, where poppies abound

In a small French village, by the name of Fricourt
Now Johnson’s home, along with a hundred or more
So rest in peace brave soldier, who died not in vain
Unknown your past maybe, but we will remember your name
