The Veteran

Look ‘at’ me not ‘through’ me in the doorway:
I’m not just a derelict wrecked on the shoals of Life
But a Veteran: of the Falklands, Bosnia, or the Gulf.
Only a fellow soldier can understand
The Fear, Pain, Exhilaration, Terror that Combat brings.
Despair assails you, loneliness overwhelms you
With the nightmares and flashbacks of Memory
You can never, ever escape the bony prison of the skull.
