The Plunge

I am falling into the abyss of my own inadequacy
No life-saving rope attached to my emotions
No foot-holds or hand-holds to break my fall
Only the slippery slope of inevitability
As I fall into the morass that is my life
I scream and shout out loud
For someone to halt my descent
But only silence
No reaching hand
No cry of anguish
Just the silence
As I continue to fall
Only silence
No loving glance
No flowers tossed
Only silence
The blackness
The silence
And the silence wins
