The Knock

When I married my soldier
How love makes one forget!
When he marches off to war
My life seems to stop
There are people who fill my day
But when night time comes
All rational thought takes flight

During this silent world
When darkness reigns
Happy people sleep
But peace sadly eludes me
Lying all alone, pleading,
begging, listening, offering
silent prayers like a mantra
Please – don’t send the knock
How I fear the knock!

That’s my greatest fear
Every little sound
Is like an electric shock
The greatest fear of all
Is the Families’ Officer’s knock
Seeing the gates of Hades opening
Would make heart stop.

When the TV is on
People see my husband’s courage
Does anyone think about me?
Sitting on my own
Watching the clock
Tick tock, tick tock
