The Cost

In a quiet country churchyard
lies the sad neglected grave
Of a poor forgotten Soldier
No one had cared to save

His heart was full of love
For the way of life he knew
But he laid it on that altar
To fight your war for you

To soldiers wars bring wisdom
Along with suffering and pain
But man’s inhumanity to man
They never wish to see again
Though he’d won this battle
His life one day he lost
They say he died by his own hand
For his mind had paid the cost
