That higher purpose

No nobler cause exists on earth
Than doing what’s thought good and just.
That higher purpose which men serve…
That common bond which binds us all
Those tears we shed when others fall.
Though choirs of death and glory sing-
‘Men died for country, queen, or king.’
Let them lie, and let them scheme
There is one love which stands supreme.
‘Together ye fought, ye laughed, ye cried
Yer comrades were the ones most prized.’
Though flags may fly, bagpipes may play
You died for those you loved that day…
