Silver was the night

Silver was the night
As frost glistened on sleepy trees
A fox passes silently by
As if unaware of the freeze

An owl hoots overhead
A mournful cry for some prey
The biting frost is hard
It will snow by the start of the day

A badger leaves his set
Cautiously looking around
Alert to any danger
Attuned to the night’s every sound

Somewhere in the distance
Is a village just out of sight
People huddled together
‘Round fires on this silver night

How safe to be inside
Away from this mantle of light
Protected from the world
That sparkles like silver tonight
