SILENT TEARS

She nursed him through that night

Watched his lips twitch

Heard the obscenities

Saw the fear in his restless eyes

She was there with him

As he re-lived the horrors

Of battle and death

Witnessed his pain

As he felt the bomb-blast

Over and over again

She held his bandaged hands

As if she could ease his troubled mind

But the young German soldier

Lost his final battle

And she wept, silent tears,

For a lost generation
