Shot at dawn

Why did you wait for the day to break
For God’s light to fill the sky
Before you placed a blindfold on his head
And ordered him to die

Did you witness the sheer terror
In the eyes of my only son
Did you listen to his heartbeat
As you loaded up that gun

His mind was paralysed by fear
With images he could not bear
Too terrified to shed a tear
No emotion left inside to care

A war that ripped his soul apart
And made his spirit flee
Why Lord did he run the other way
Instead of back to me

This would certainly not have been
The path of life that he would choose
And I pray to God no son of yours
Will ever walk in his shoes
