Conferred by one who was ‘French Forces’ head
On those of meritorious intent
“It is with baubles such, that men are led”
(Known utterance Napoleon didst vent)
Twas ‘Little Corp’ral’ now ‘Môn General’
Who raised from common horde, ‘Chevalier’
No longer twere exempt, but dec’rable
As any landed gentry of the day
Where once bestowed on patriots of France
Awarded to exclusion of close friends
Hath now relented of such inward stance
To honour those deserving (make amends)
For Bonaparte himself didst one time spake
“Tis common cause, not death….which martyrs make”
