Midnight Train

With nonchalance I glance through glass divide
As “all aboard” rings out in final call
I see her scurry by with curt aside
Dared hope to notice mind as held enthral
My proffered smile doth play on empty space
Reflected back without its target met
Such fleeting image scribed a gentle face
Expression shown didst scarce belong as set
Now carriage lurches forth in hopeful gain
Perchance she may deploy within my sight
Wouldst make the journey less of sad refrain
Distracting thoughts away from lonely plight
Said “brief encounter” may this once extend
Beyond two passing ships dark nights portend
