Looking Back

Have you seen a building collapse?
brick by brick
flames engulf the debris
enough to make you sick,
standing in the shelter
a memory I keep
a country then at war
nightmares in my sleep.

The wardens were kept busy
fire-watching through the night,
boys and men were fighting
to free us from this plight,
the war to end all war
the world has gone quite mad
lessons now forgotten
no wonder I feel sad.

I see another generation
march against the foe
a different kind of war
for reasons I don’t know?
there is sorrow for the victims
there is grief on either side,
we keep the candles burning
but can’t turn back the tide.
