INNOCENT GRIEF

I wanted to play
But you’d gone away
Mommy was crying
Grandma was sighing
‘What will you do
Now you are two?
I held mommy’s hand
Tried to understand
Why she was sad
And where was my dad?
She patted my head
Said ‘go back to bed’
Gave me a smile
‘I’ll be up in a while’
I climbed the stairs
Knelt for my prayers
Dear God in the sky
Do you know why
When I wanted to play
You took him away.
