Farewell to Basra

Under starlight
oil and blood
glint the same;
from pulse or pump
a viscous unction,
dark coagulation;
stains soaking
through clotted crust
to anoint the ground:
oil to sand
blood to dust
ashes blown on pitch-black stone.
