Every day I wear a mask

Everyday I wear a mask
I smile and say good morning to all I see
I am pleasant and always look happy
Everyone acknowledges my presence when I walk into a room
I am a bright light shining in all this gloom

But when I am alone
All alone in the dark
That is when my nightmares start
I dare not close my eyes
For that is when the demons come alive

The demons will chase me through my dreams
I am so scared l lie there wanting to scream
What has happened to my peaceful dreams?

But after the darkness there will be light
And that is when the demons take flight
I get up from the sweat drenched bed
And stare straight ahead
I have to feel around for my mask for it has fallen to the ground
I put it back on not making a sound
