Bang Bang The Drum Slowly

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Carry the brave hero high
Stand at the graveside together
As loved ones bid him goodbye

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Remember the hero with pride
Tell all his heartbroken loved ones
Of his valour and how he died

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Comfort his child and his wife
Tell them how little he suffered
Of the pride that he had in his life

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Comfort his mother and dad
Tell them he was a good soldier
And all of the fun times you had

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Tell friends”to the cause he was true”
Walk away from that graveyard
Stop thinking it could have been you

Bang Bang the drum slowly
Look back and the weeping goes on
The hope that they had for the future
Lies shattered – their hero is gone

The bang on the drum is now silenced
A proud mum and dad walk away
His wife and his child are still crying
In her grief she is starting to sway

A friend reaches out to hold her
They finally stumble away
The soldiers stand at the gatepost
All wondering if they should stay

Bang Bang the drum slowly
They know they have said their goodbye
Best to leave and prepare for
The next hero to carry on high
